Course Descriptions:

Cadet Band                                                    

This level is open to all students in grades 6-8 who would like to learn to play an instrument for the first time (flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone only - no saxophone), or those students who wish to switch to a new instrument (limited number of instruments available for loan).  Any student wishing to start drums will need to complete at least one semester on the orchestra bells. The Cadet Band will participate in multiple concerts during the school year and at the CMEA Festival in the spring.

Concert Band                                   

This band will consist of 7^th grade students who have participated in Squire Band or Cadet Band, with possibly some 6th grade students as needed.  Emphasis will be on a further refinement of technique, music reading, and musicianship.  The Concert Band will perform at multiple concerts during the school year, at the CMEA Festival in the spring, and at 8^th grade graduation.  Please note: All placements will be done by the music director.

Jazz Band                                                       

This class is limited to advanced instrumental music students.  Jazz Band meets daily before school, and therefore takes an extra commitment from its members.  This ensemble performs many times during the course of the year at regional festivals, as well as CMEA festivals, community events and school concerts.  Instrumentation exclusive to: alto saxophone, tenor, saxophone, baritone saxophone, trombone, trumpet,  bass guitar, piano and drum set.   6th grade placement is at the recommendation of the director. By audition only.   

String Orchestra                                   

This class is open to students in grades 6 – 8; prior musical background is recommended but not required. This instrumental class will introduce, review and reinforce basic string concepts, proper posture, and instrument maintenance and rehearsal etiquette while learning orchestral literature on violin, viola, cello or string bass. The String Orchestra will participate in multiple concerts during the school year and at the CMEA Orchestra Festival in the spring.  

Symphonic Band                              

This band is the top level band at WCI for 8^th grade students.  Emphasis will be on advanced music literature, musicianship, and technique refinement.  The Symphonic Band will prepare and perform challenging music at multiple concerts during the school year and at the CMEA Festival in the spring.  Please note: All placements are done by the music director.
