    Squire Band
     
    We will be using the texting app REMIND
    To connect: text @squireban to 81010
    • Students will be using Standard of Excellence Book 1 to start the year
    • Section 9 Rhythm Sheet practice
    • We will all be reinforcing proper posture, rehearsal etiquette, rhythm and hand positions
    • Students will receive a complimentary new method book, Essential Elements 2000 Bk 2 by January
    • Students are expected to care for their loaned book for the school year and return it back to me, intact at the end of the school year. You are also most welcome to buy your own at a music store.
    • We will also be using Harmonic Rhythmic Etudes in our warm ups much later in the school year. These books will be used at school only and will not go home with students.
    • Squire Band & Cadet Band play at all concerts together, as one band and rehearsals wil be scheduled as needed.

    • Students will receive a complimentary copy Standard of Excellence Book 1 method book to start the year ad will be moved into Essential Elements Book 2 when it is appropriate.
    • Students are expected to care for this loaned book all year and return it back to me, intact at the end of the school year. You are also most welcome to buy your own at a music store.
    • Students interested in drums will need to play on bells for at least a quarter. If you test out on bells, you may be switched to the other percussion instruments: snare drum, bass drum, cymbals.
    • Squire Band & Cadet Band play at all concerts together, as one band and rehearsals wil be scheduled as needed.

    REMINDERS

    • The room will be open at the end of the day until at least 3:30 for students to pick up their instruments.
    • The  Music Room is for music students only! Please leave your friends outside, unless you've received permission from me, first. 
    • ID tags for instrument cases are on sale for $2.00 in music room. ID tags of any kind are mandatory.
    • I'm not allowed to ask for donations as per ditrict policy; however I will always accept a donation if you send it in: checks made out to WCI Music
    • Students that are borrowing a school instrument MUST bring in the signed release form before the instrument leaves the room for home practice.

    GRADING
    • 20% Practice Records (120 minutes, or 2 hours a week)
    • 20% Citizenship
    • 20% Cooperative Class Participation
    • 20% Performance Participation / Attendance
    • 20% Homework, quizzes, in class assignments
     
     
     
    Students always have extra credit opportunity:
    1. Attend a live concert of any nature, and write a one page essay detailing this event. Include either a program or ticket stub from the event. Be sure to turn this in within 2 weeks of having attended the event!
    2. Practice extra time beyond the 2 hour required weekly practice time. Extra credit is awarded in 30 minute increments (5 points for every 30 minutes up to a maximum of 2 hours).
    3. Extra credit up to 10 points is awarded for performance participation in outside groups and/or recitals. Bring your program to me within 2 weeks of the performance.

    What should be practiced at home?
    1. Good posture and proper breathing.
    2. Lines from Standard of Excellence.
    3. Concert music (if applicable, depending on the group).
    4. A consistent routine of setting up instrument, and practicing in a quiet place free of distraction.
    5. Section 2 scales sheet will be handed out to Squire Band in October.
    6. Students should be practicing at least 15 - 20 minutes a day.

    Students should be "logging" their practice time (120 minutes is required for the 20 points a week: every 30 minutes practiced earns 5 points) on the calendar portion of their student planner. Parents can verify that this practicing took place by either:

    • Signing the planner the evening before a record is due, or
    • On the morning it is due, or
    • initial every day practicing takes place.
