    8th Grade English Information:

Homework: Please use the "Class Calendar" tab to view current homework and classwork due dates.  On the day something is DUE, it will be highlighted in YELLOW. On the day something is ASSIGNED, it will be highlighted in lavendar.  Students will also need to keep their planner up to date. Reminder texts and emails will be sent out to those who've joined my class on Remind.com. Please send an e-mail if you need the code again.

Reading and Literature: This year, we will be reading several novels and short stories, studying authors, engaging in poetry, and learning a lot about literature from various artilcles and prose. Also, independent reading is an important part of your reading journey as an 8th grader. Always have a book that you can be reading on your own!

Writing: Our main units of study in writing are Literary Essay, Narrative (memoir), and Investigative Journalism. I will be incorporating sub-genres in writing as well, such as Character Analysis, Thematic Essay, Personal Essay and Poetry.  Writing homework will take place either in the English Notebook or in Google Docs (if drafting). In addition, students will write six Genius Hour papers throughout the year. Two of them will turn into class presentations.

Vocabulary: Word study will be embedded into the reading and writing units of study.

Grammar: Grammar lessons and practice will occur within the context of our writing. Students will become analytical "noticers" of grammar, its usage, and how to spot and revise common grammar mistakes.

The 4 C's:  Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity and Collaboration. All students will work toward strengthening their abilities to participate in class discussion, communicate effectively through speaking and writing, collaborate in group settings and think critically and logically about topics presented and discussed in class. In 8th grade, students grow TREMENDOUSLY in these areas as they are pushed to develop their voices, ideas and convictions in my class! It's quite amazing to see the growth throughout the course of the year.
