    Students can participate in the WCI Visual Arts Department by taking the following electives:

    Exploratory Art (6th grade wheel):

    Students will explore art through the use of a variety of mediums, including, watercolor, oil pastel, colored pencil and graphite. Elements of cartooning, shading and pencil techniques, color theory and mixing paints, a Vincent Van Gogh presentation and work, clay pots with glazing techniques and more will be covered.

    Art I                                                   

    This course will be presented with a creative format and is open to all.  It is designed to teach visual arts with an emphasis on originality, both past and present. Projects include: drawing, painting, and color, principles of design, perspective and figure drawing. Students will also create sculpture or pottery with clay and paper maché.  Students will learn to respect and celebrate their own original work in a safe, fun environment. The styles and contributions of Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol and M.C. Escher will be studied. Artistic talent not needed, only a willingness to learn.  Students will be graded on the effort put into learning new ideas.

    Art II                                                  

    This advanced class is open to 8th grade students who want to expand their art techniques with creative ideas using various media. Advanced lessons in drawing, painting, color, principles of design, printmaking and figure drawing will be presented. Pop Art , Haring, Dali and Picasso are all featured artists, where we will learn each style and contribution. We will explore art with long-term projects. Self-direction and creative choice will be encouraged in this fun-filled class.

    Cartooning                              

    In this year-long course, students will gain experience with drawing more dynamic and engaging pieces.  Students will be encouraged to try new techniques and will use different media to create comic style drawings.  Story development, creative writing and drawing comic strips and pages will be more of the focus in this class.  In the second semester the class will also create animation using flip books, paper puppets, and computers. Students should be serious about drawing.
