    Free Choice Spelling Homework
     
    Our spelling program:
    The first five words on the spelling list follow a rule that we will be learning and discussing throughout the week. Numbers 6 - 10 are high frequency words, no excuse words for 4th grade, or frequently misspelled words.
     
    How to do the choice assignments:

    Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will choose and complete one of the assignments listed below. Homework is turned in daily. Thursday each student MUST take a PRACTICE SPELLING TEST and write any word missed 5 times. Practice tests need to be turned in Friday morning, even if you earned 100%. All spelling homework MUST be done in CURSIVE!!!

     

    Monday - Wednesday Free Choice Assignments:

    1. Alphabetize the words.
    2. Write each word in pen three times.
    3. Write the definition of each word.
    4. Write a synonym or antonym for each word (if possible).
    5. Add a prefix or suffix to each word (if possible). If the word already has a prefix or suffix use the base word and add a different prefix or suffix to the word.
    6. Write 10 sentences using all 10 of your spelling words. Sentences must be quality, 4th grade level sentences. Each sentence should have at least 8 words in it.
    7. Write a story using at least 8 spelling words and highlight them.   

    Week 15 (12/2 - 12/6)

     This week's rule is ADDING THE PREFIX -UNDER: The prefix 'under' means below or less than

    Week 16 (12/9 - 12/13)

     This week's rule is OPEN SYLLABLE V/CV: An open syllable ends with a vowel which has a long sound (it says its own name). An open syllable may have a single final vowel such as in, be, or go, or it may be part of a longer word (open)

    Week 17 (12/16 - 12/20)

     This week's rule is OPEN SYLLABLE VV: When two vowels are together, the first vowel will have the long vowel sound.

    Week 18 (1/6- 1/10)

     This week's rule is DOUBLE VOWELS -AI AND -AY: The first vowel has the long sound and the second vowel is usually silent. The 'ai' vowel combination is used in the beginning or middle of a word and says /a/. The 'ay' vowel combination usually occurs at the end of a word or syllable and says /a/.

    Week 19 (1/13 - 1/17)

     This week's rule is DOUBLE VOWELS -OA AND -OE: Both 'oa' and 'oe' usually have an /o/ sound. Usually 'oa' is used in the beginning or middle of a word. Usually 'oe' is used at the end of a word or syllable.
