Free Choice Spelling HomeworkOur spelling program:The first five words on the spelling list follow a rule that we will be learning and discussing throughout the week. Numbers 6 - 10 are high frequency words, no excuse words for 4th grade, or frequently misspelled words.How to do the choice assignments:
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will choose and complete one of the assignments listed below. Homework is turned in daily. Thursday each student MUST take a PRACTICE SPELLING TEST and write any word missed 5 times. Practice tests need to be turned in Friday morning, even if you earned 100%. All spelling homework MUST be done in CURSIVE!!!
Monday - Wednesday Free Choice Assignments:
- Alphabetize the words.
- Write each word in pen three times.
- Write the definition of each word.
- Write a synonym or antonym for each word (if possible).
- Add a prefix or suffix to each word (if possible). If the word already has a prefix or suffix use the base word and add a different prefix or suffix to the word.
- Write 10 sentences using all 10 of your spelling words. Sentences must be quality, 4th grade level sentences. Each sentence should have at least 8 words in it.
- Write a story using at least 8 spelling words and highlight them.

This week's rule is OPEN SYLLABLE V/CV: An open syllable ends with a vowel which has a long sound (it says its own name). An open syllable may have a single final vowel such as in, be, or go, or it may be part of a longer word (open)

Week 17 (12/16 - 12/20)
This week's rule is OPEN SYLLABLE VV: When two vowels are together, the first vowel will have the long vowel sound.

Week 18 (1/6- 1/10)
This week's rule is DOUBLE VOWELS -AI AND -AY: The first vowel has the long sound and the second vowel is usually silent. The 'ai' vowel combination is used in the beginning or middle of a word and says /a/. The 'ay' vowel combination usually occurs at the end of a word or syllable and says /a/.

This week's rule is DOUBLE VOWELS -OA AND -OE: Both 'oa' and 'oe' usually have an /o/ sound. Usually 'oa' is used in the beginning or middle of a word. Usually 'oe' is used at the end of a word or syllable.
