• The district character education program, Character Counts, is made up of six core elements, also referred to as the "Six Pillars" (You'll sometimes still hear them referred to as "lifeskills", essentially the core concepts are the same). All Walnut Heights teachers, specialists, and parent volunteers are encouraged to embed the language in all daily interaction, making it a part of the school culture. The language will come up naturally in problem solving situations, and it is our hope that this natural progression will extend to conversations, compliments and problem-solving situations at home as well!

Additionally, we employ specific problem-solving strategies in class and on the playground, using a tool known as the "Problem Solving Wheel". A large metal, full color version hangs on the playground just behind the school office, serving as a reminder to students when needed.

We encourage you to download and print each of the Six Pillars mini-posters, and the Problem Solving Wheel, for your home - just click on the "Six Pillars Posters" link in the menu bar to your left, then follow the simple download instructions!
